Several reports have emerged on the internet that claim Elon Musk is developing plans to build his own private airport somewhere in Austin, Texas. According to Austonia, the exact location and the timeline for Musk’s private airport are unknown as of yet but “the conceptual plans have been confirmed by sources who say the airport would be east of Austin, near Bastrop.” The private airport would likely service Musk’s companies including Tesla, The Boring Company, and SpaceX, along with being available for private jet travel for himself and his executives. Bastrop is around 30 miles or about a half an hour’s drive from Gigafactory Texas. You might remember that Tesla relocated its corporate headquarters to Austin last year, while Austin job openings and filed public documents indicate that SpaceX is planning to build a facility in Bastrop County.
Musk and his group of companies own thousands of acres of land in Central Texas, with the Gigafactory in Austin alone accounting for 2500 acres. The Boring Company, on the other hand, has its HQ in the northern part of the Austin area and is located just three miles from Austin Executive Airport, a small business and general aviation facility that serves as an alternative to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The company that’s trying to build hyper-quick mass transportation under the ground purchased 73 acres of land in Bastrop earlier this year with plans to build an 80,000-square-foot warehouse and manufacturing facility. It will be interesting to see what Musk plans to do with a private airport in Austin.
Although, it won’t be completed anytime soon as an airport requires federal EPA approval for environmental impacts and FAA approval for air traffic impacts along with clearances from multiple local authorities. The Tesla Technoking currently uses a 2015 Gulfstream G650 to travel to Austin and other locations; however, he has already placed an order for a state-of-the-art Gulfstream G700 as a replacement for his aging business jet.
