Finnair partners with Marimekko to bring design to the skies

Tired of seeing the same overused shades of blues and grays on flights? Finnair, the national airline for Finland, is teaming up with the famed house of design Marimekko to bring style back to the skies. Said to begin in spring 2013, all Finnair planes will feature Finnish designer Marimekko’s unique collection of textiles and tableware. The designer’s distinctive prints will be immediately recognizable as they are emblazoned across the textiles. This unique collaboration between two giants will last three years.

Talking about the collaboration CEO of Finnair, Mika Vehviläinen, said, “Finnair has a strong design heritage, and this cooperation brings our design thinking to a new level.” He also outlined that the airline’s goal was to become a design airline and bring customers a unique experience that will stimulate all five senses. An Airbus A340 bearing the Unikko floral print already operates between Helsinki and varied Asian destinations, another such aircraft, dressed in Marimekko finery, will be unveiled in spring 2013.
The airline will also sell an exclusive selection of Marimekko designs onboard the Finnair flight and the Finnair Plus shop. This unique collaboration should help make monotonous flights a lot more exciting.
