Commuters passing through New York’s Grand Central Terminal on Wednesday, May 17, got an unlikely glimpse of high fashion glamour and Hollywood glitz when Chanel staged its 2006/07 Cruise collection show there, drawing celebrity devotees such as Mischa Barton, Julianne Moore, Naomi Watts and Maria Bello. Typically shown in between the fall and spring shows in a quiet showroom setting, cruise, or resort, as they’re also known, collections have now become major events unto themselves, as evidenced by Chanel’s elaborate presentations. For Karl Lagerfeld, showing in one of the most timeless hubs of New York transit – Grand Central – made perfect sense for Chanel, a label that has epitomized chic for close to a century. “Cruise is all about travelling, so the symbol of the station is a good idea,” said Lagerfeld.
Characteristically mixing high with low, Lagerfeld injected the house’s luxurious signature looks, such as the classic tweed jacket, with an urban edginess by covering it with a Chanel logo graffiti print. Chanel travel collection was comprised of chic, edgy and feminine looks meshing classic Chanel silhouettes with a rock-star sensibility. The collection also featured unusual footwear – flat, knee-length Grecian sandals in leather with interweaving and silver buckles. Barton said one of her favourites was a black party dress that had a thick gold band fastened at the waist with a shiny rose.
Karl Lagerfeld has a message: Travel in style, not sweat pants, and look pretty.
