Firsts are great for several reasons – especially if it concerns a revered and fanatically popular comic that we’re talking about! And proving so is the recent sale of the debut Captain America novel, which commanded over $3 million at auction.
The first of its kind to feature Captain America, the book was sold as part of Heritage Auctions’ comics and comic art event, concluding on Saturday (April 2, 2022). It was published in the year 1941 and bore the first references to Steve Rogers, his sidekick Sgt. James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, and the super-villain Red Skull.
The much-touted for copy spans 45 pages and has been accorded with a near-mint grading of 9.4 from the Certified Guaranty Company. Further, according to Heritage Auctions, there are only three known copies of the issue that have received a 9.4 grading.
While bids started at $1.825 million, they were quick to escalate to $2.2 million before finally closing at $3.1 million. The comic’s sale makes it the fourth-highest amount ever paid for a comic at auction, with Superman and Spider-Man being the only other superheroes whose comic book debuts have sold for over $3 million.
