Ferrari has sent yet another stallion galloping out of its stables, this time christened the 488 Spider. A retractable hard-top version of the 488 GTB released in March, the Spider builds on the 458 cabriolet. Slated to debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, this Italian gem comes with a new aluminum spaceframe, making it 23% more rigid than its predecessor. This also accounts for better handling and a more comfortable ride. The car’s roof retracts and stows away in just 14 seconds, enabling a quicker switch between a cocooned ride or one with the wind keeping you company.
Like the 488 GTB, the 488 Spider also packs a 3.9-liter, twin-turbocharged, flat-plane crank V8 engine. This one’s capable of churning out 661 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque, all of which is sent to the car’s rear wheels. With a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission hooked on, the car is capable of touching the 62 miles per hour mark in well below 3.2 seconds, a fraction of a second slower than the hard-top version. Boasting a top speed of 203 miles per hour, the 488 Spider comes complete with the very best from Maranello’s facilities. The inclusion of the retractable hard-top roof system gives the 488 Spider an extra 110 pounds over the 488 GTB model.
